Shared Spaces, Shared Lives: Ensuring a Happy Cogitation

In our bustling and turbulent modern life, many people opt to share space with others - be it from the shared sense of camaraderie in adversity or the longing for mutual support and assistance. Whether with a roommate, relative or partner, through shared spaces, we grow to deepen our understanding of, and respect for, each other's lives, broadening our life’s perspectives in the process.

Yet, the challenge lies in maintaining cleanliness and order while sharing room and board - or as the saying goes: “a tidy room doesn't have to be big, just like a scented flower need not be plentiful”. Indeed, achieving this level of harmony within shared spaces can be accomplished by learning and applying a few wise rules.

1. Sharing dialogue and creating consensus

Life's journey is akin to a lone boat drifting in an endless sea of clouds, with companions resembling the sea of clouds that we inevitably need to share both sweet and bitter moments with. Just as "water can carry a boat, but it can also capsize it", without proper reconciliation and adjustments, conflicts and disputes may easily arise when rooming together. Therefore, it’s essential to have open and frank dialogues, establishing common ground on the basis of understanding and respect - this is the foundation of harmonious cohabitation.

One of my friends, who resides in Michigan, USA, shares an unbelievably harmonious relationship with his roommate. They even launched a media company together after a year of cohabitating. When asked the secret to such a harmonious alliance during a friend's gathering, he told us about their habit of holding regular house meetings. This practice allowed them to peacefully settle daily disputes and avoid discomfort caused by individual preferences, consequently deepening their friendship and making their relationship more tight-knit and harmonious.

2. Responsibility allocation

Just as we long for a just and orderly society where "everyone does their job and carries their responsibility", in shared living spaces, we should adhere to the philosophy of "sweep the snow on your own doorstep and do not worry about the frost on other’s roofs". Clear and fair allocation of responsibilities not only ensures life's order but also promotes fairness, efficiency, and harmony.

For example, when I was in college, living in a four-person dormitory, everybody had clear responsibilities. One roommate, Scarlet, even made a weekly duty roster dividing the tasks such as shopping or cleaning duties amongst us. Along with everyone fulfilling their responsibilities, our living condition was well-organized and orderly, and life became more harmonious and enjoyable.

In summation, clear allocation of responsibilities is the cornerstone of life’s order. It allows everyone to coexist harmoniously in shared spaces, ensuring a well-maintained living order.

3. Setting rules

A towering tree’s intricate branches rely on the strength of its roots and the guidance of growth rules to strive upwards collectively. This analogy lends us the understanding that, to ensure a harmonious living environment, we need to set and abide by some basic rules and principles within shared spaces. These rules safeguard individuals' dignity and freedom of expression, allowing us to be respected while also respecting others.

Refining these rules, such as when to keep quiet or when it's acceptable to invite friends over, can significantly reduce conflicts and misunderstandings arising from individual habits and lifestyles. Proper order tames harmony within the space, smoothing the bumps in life, and allowing for a smooth living experience.

4. Respecting others

Harmonious coexistence is built on mutual respect. As the saying goes: "Those who are revered accommodate all things, and thus, all things are equal". When living together, we cannot ignore others' existence and their unique habits - we must respect and accommodate them. Only then can we truly experience the warmth and joy of shared living.

In conclusion, to maintain a neat and harmonious living environment, several key points need to be achieved: full communication and consensus to prevent potential conflicts, clear responsibility allocations for everyone to understand their roles, proper rule setting to guide and regulate everyone's behaviors, and respecting others. These are the essential methods and principles for achieving the goal of “valuing harmony” while cohabitating with others.

What seems to be a simple shared living space requires our collective maintenance and effort. Whether it's communication, responsibility allocation, rule setting, or mutual respect, all aim to create a better shared environment. As time flows like a gentle stream, let us find harmony in our daily lives and experience the unique charm of shared living.
